Meet the Expert
Daniel Ruffo was born and raised in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico; a place internationally known for its fine wines from the Guadalupe Valley. It was during his adolescent years that he got his first encounter with Tequila. One day at a wedding his uncle had a Tequila bottle; he explained to him that only real “Machos” drank Tequila. The smell of the drink was captivating to him; he wanted to prove to his uncle that he was a real “Macho”. They began contesting to see who was a true “Macho”, the uncle would take a shot followed by Daniel and so on. After the 4th shot Daniel gave up, he wished he had never agreed to the contest. The next after experiencing a terrible hangover, he learned a lesson that was to become his Tequila philosophy:
As noble as Tequila is, don’t abuse it or it will punish you, the spirit is meant to enjoy.
In 2007 while living in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; he began working in Tequila Cave. Working under the wing of Iván Terán Reyes a certified Tequila Expert, Daniel expanded his knowledge and appreciation with a passion for Tequila. This is where he immersed in the world of Tequila, promoting its culture with guided Tequila tastings, and Tequila cuisine pairings to many tourist from all over the world.
After leaving Cabo San Lucas in 2010, Daniel moved to Los Angeles, CA; where he has established MACHO: Tequila Events as a way to promote all over the U.S real Mexican Tequila culture, and other related Agave affairs.
To accomplish this in 2011 he attended a Tequila Expert Certification in Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico; the Heartland of Tequila. The certification was given by the Academia Mexicana de Catadores de Tequila, imparted by its president and founder Francisco Hajnal Alfaros, a well known Maestro Tequilero that has retired from Jose Cuervo Tequila. This is the only institution allowed by the CRT to provide this certification after a complete assessment on all aspects of Tequila. After the certification he traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico where he learned in depth about the history and process of Mezcal.
A young expert with passion for Tequila, thriving by continually immersing in the on going education process of the world of Tequila. Being a member of Academia Mexicana de Catadores de Tequila and traveling to Tequila, Jalisco to meet with Tequila producers and learning their different process that make their Tequila unique.
