The term Tequilier is loosely associated with Sommelier, a french term describing a wine expert.
The Regulatory Council of Tequila (CRT) and NOM-006-SCFI-2005 do not recognize the term Tequilier, since Tequila is a Mexican tradition and paying homage to it with a french term would be redundant.
Tequila industry professionals in Mexico use the terms: Expert and/or Maestro Tequilero (Tequila Master). The latest being the most highly rewarded and respected in the field. Through years of endeavor, continuous learning and experience, the Maestro Tequilero has sharpened his senses and is able to craft the most exquisite Tequilas.
Just recently Francisco Hajnal Alfaro, Maestro Tequilero, president and founder of the Academia Mexicana de Catadores de Tequila; was given the official license to grant the appointment of Maestro Tequilero. exclusively given to people active in the Tequila industry, after having passed a thoroughly examination.
People that hold the titles of Maestro Tequilero (Tequila Master) or Grand Master Tequilier must have certification, or they could face legal sanctions.
The Mexican Academy of Tequila Tasters, A.C. is recognized by the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry and the Tequila Regulatory Council, AC as the only academy of its kind, that is able to spread the culture of Tequila by their activities.
